Korean Potter Glazing Crane Vase in Catania Hall

by Ray Benitez

Stark fluorescent tubes cast a cold, even glow across a ceremonial hall where a Korean potter works on a glazed vase. The artisan's hands move with precision over the curved ceramic surface, applying a slip that reveals a delicate crane motif in pale celadon. Deep shadows pool in the corners of the room, against the bright work area. Outside the high windows, low-hanging clouds obscure the night sky, hinting at the turn of the seasons. Layers of empty chairs and stone pillars recede into the darkness, showing vast, quiet space. The wet glaze on the vase reflects the overhead lights as a sharp, liquid edge.
