Transmission Towers Stepping Across Frost Fields at Night

by Micheal Cox

Steel lattice towers march across a frost-hardened field, their geometric legs anchoring into the frozen ground near a canal lock chamber in Saint-Louis. The sky above is a deep, star-filled void, offering the only illumination alongside a faint, diffuse glow rising from the horizon. Cold, pale light reflects off the ice-crusted grass, highlighting the sharp angles of the metal structures against the soft, dark earth. The canal lock walls rise silently to the side, their concrete surfaces damp and dark under the night sky. Leading lines formed by the tower base and the lock edge draw the gaze toward the distant horizon where the night sky meets the faint ground light. One reflection of a star glimmers on the wet concrete of the lock wall.
