Tokay Gecko Calls from Brick Crevice Near Gurgaon

by Barry Andrews

Reflected water light washes over a rough brick crevice beside a tidal inlet near Gurgaon. A tokay gecko perches on the damp masonry, mouth open in a call. Flakes of snow drift slowly through the clear late-afternoon air, settling on the reptile's textured, bumpy skin and the wet stones. Peak autumn appears as a layer of white powder covers the ground. The low angle frames the gecko's stillness against the flowing water. Each snowflake lands softly on the reptile's scales, creating a sharp contrast between the warm tones of the gecko and the cool, falling white. A small patch of green moss rests on the lower brick edge.
