Tarantula Hawk Wasp on Wind-Scoured Ridge in on a wind-scoured ridge in Western Australia

Tarantula Hawk Wasp on Wind-Scoured Ridge

by Ellen Pittman

Hard coastal glare flattens the pale, wind-scoured sand of a Western Australian ridge. A tarantula hawk wasp anchors the lower right third, its iridescent blue-black wings catching the harsh light. The insect's long, spindly legs grip the gritty surface, while fine dust particles hang suspended in the air, blurred by the whipping wind. Dry, sparse vegetation clumps appear in the background, bleached by the cool season sun. The wasp's glossy exoskeleton reflects the intense brightness, against the matte, eroded texture of the sand beneath it. One grain of sand rests on the tip of its rear leg.
