Wasp Mandibles on Wood in Cornish Stream

by Thomas Villanueva

Dappled sunlight cuts through low-hanging winter clouds to strike a fragment of weathered wood fiber. The pale, rough grain of the timber runs diagonally across the frame, sharply detailed under bright midmorning light. A wasp rests upon this surface, its dark amber and black mandibles dominating the view in an extreme close-up. Fine hairs line the segmented edges of the pincers, which curve inward to grip the fibrous material with rigid tension. Behind the insect, the background dissolves into soft greens and greys of a glacial stream below. A sharp shadow falls across the lower mandible at the base of the insect.
