Taiko Drummers at Nara Shrine Sunset

by Kendra Madden

Low amber light slices across the weathered wood of a large taiko drum, highlighting the taut, pale hide stretched tight over the rim. Four performers in indigo happi coats lean forward in unison, their arms raised mid-stroke. The setting sun casts long, sharp shadows that stretch across the stone lanterns and wooden veranda of the Nara shrine precinct. Dramatic clouds swirl overhead in shades of burnt orange and slate gray, pressing low against the ancient cedar trees. Sweat glistens on the foreheads of the musicians, catching the fading light. The grain of the drum surface is rough and worn, against the smooth, dark lacquer of the surrounding temple pillars. One drumstick hovers inches above the skin, frozen in the moment before impact.
