Midnight Yosakoi Dancers in Soma Square Shadows

by Linda Webster

Deep shadow covers the public square near Soma where midnight holds the turn of seasons. Low-hanging clouds press against the sky, diffusing faint rim light that outlines the silhouettes of dancers. An archway creates a frame within a frame, isolating a group in the foreground. Traditional yukata ripple in the darkness, while bright red and yellow naruko clappers they hold create sharp, colorful streaks against the gloom. The dancers move with intimate precision, their forms defined only by thin edges of light catching their hair and fabric. One clapper rests momentarily still against a dancer's palm, its wood grain visible in the dim glow before the next strike. A thin line of light falls across the edge of the archway.
