Taiko Drummers Silhouetted at Nara Shrine

by Jean Richardson

Golden sunlight streams through rain-wetted cedar trees, turning the courtyard figures into sharp black silhouettes against the bright sky. Five drummers stand in a tight row, their koshi-belted hanten jackets and bare legs outlined by the low sun. They strike massive taiko drums in unison, arms frozen at the peak of the downward arc. The polished wood of the drum rims catches a faint glint of light while the heavy drum skins remain dark voids. Wet stone pavers reflect the warm sky, and droplets rest on the wooden temple pillars in the background. The low angle emphasizes the height of the drummers against the ancient red gate arching overhead. One raindrop slides down the curved edge of the nearest drumhead.
