Midnight Taiko Drummers Strike Arashiyama Festival Stage in on a festival main stage in Arashiyama, Kyoto

Midnight Taiko Drummers Strike Arashiyama Festival Stage

by Ariana Keith

Distant street lamps spill warm amber light across a wooden festival stage in Arashiyama, Kyoto, where four taiko drummers stand in unison. Their bare arms and traditional happi coats glow against the dark midsummer night. Thick drumsticks blur as they strike the taut red and black drumheads, sending vibrations through the air. Fine dust particles drift through the beams of light, catching the glow like suspended gold. The foreground dissolves into soft, out-of-focus greenery, framing the performers. Sweat glistens on the drummers' foreheads, and the texture of the worn wood beneath their feet is sharp under the artificial illumination. One drumhead ripples with the impact of the strike.
