Tabla drums on stage in Evora at midnight
by Harry Chase
Stark fluorescent light floods the wooden stage floor in Evora, illuminating a pair of brass tabla drums resting on a patterned rug. The metal surfaces of the drums reflect the cool, overhead glow, creating sharp highlights against the darkened theater surroundings. Low-hanging clouds obscure the sky visible through the high stage windows, casting a diffuse gray light that contrasts with the artificial brightness. Early winter is evident in the bare branches of trees seen through the distant glass and the heavy, textured weave of the rug fibers. The low angle emphasizes the circular shape of the instruments, making them appear substantial against the vast, empty stage. A faint shadow stretches from the smaller drum toward the edge of the rug, at the base of the objects in the cold, quiet space.
