Stone Observatory Dome Detail in Olsztyn Monsoon

by Harvey Franklin

Rough-hewn gray stone blocks form the curved wall of an observatory dome, their weathered surfaces absorbing the soft, diffused light of a bright midmorning. Small rivulets of water trace vertical paths down the masonry, evidence of the heavy monsoon rain that recently passed. The stone texture is coarse and pitted, against the smooth, dark metal band wrapping around the structure's circumference. Droplets rest on the crevices between the blocks, glistening faintly against the matte gray. A section of the metal hinge mechanism sits flush against the stone, its surface wet and reflecting the pale sky. Water beads roll slowly across the curved metal, leaving a wet sheen that darkens the underlying material.
