Steel Counterweight Tower Reflected in Harbor Oil in beside a bridge pier above moving water in Queensland

Steel Counterweight Tower Reflected in Harbor Oil

by Bryce McDonald

Rust-colored steel girders of a massive drawbridge counterweight tower rise vertically beside a concrete pier, their heavy industrial geometry mirrored in the dark, viscous surface of the harbor water below. The late afternoon light, softened by an overcast sky, washes the scene in muted grays and oxidized oranges without casting harsh shadows. Thin, iridescent streaks of oil slick float across the water, catching the pale sky in distorted rainbow patches that stretch alongside the tower's reflection. Cool season air leaves the metal surfaces looking crisp and dry, while the still water shows the structural monumentality with a slight ripple distortion. The reflection fractures where a small wave breaks against the pier base, merging the solid steel with the liquid oil sheen in a jagged, shimmering line.
