Starry Night Over Ancient Amphitheater Ruins Fuzhou in from a frost-hushed ridgeline near Fuzhou

Starry Night Over Ancient Amphitheater Ruins Fuzhou

by Stephen Mitchell

Clear, cold starlight spills over the weathered stone tiers of an ancient amphitheater ruin near Fuzhou. Late spring air, scrubbed clean by recent rain, reveals a dense canopy of stars against the deep black sky. The structure sits on a frost-hushed ridgeline, its rough limestone surfaces glowing faintly from residual ground light. Pools of water collected in the lower stone basins mirror the celestial sphere above, creating a perfect, inverted galaxy within the ruins. The water surface remains still, holding the reflection of the stars without a ripple. Along the curved edge of the lowest basin, a single star reflects with sharp clarity against the dark stone.
