Squirrel Burying Acorns Reed Bed Peterborough Midsummer

by Grayson McConnell

Bright midday sun floods the low-angle view of a grey squirrel pressing into soft earth at the edge of a Peterborough reed bed. The animal's fur catches harsh highlights against deep shadows cast by tall, swaying reeds. Above, dramatic cumulus clouds stack heavily, their undersides dark against the blue sky. The squirrel digs with rapid, precise movements, tossing loose soil and dried grass aside. Its tail curls tightly over its back, a dark curve against the pale ground. Tiny pebbles and scattered acorn shells lie near the fresh mound of dirt. at the edge is a single acorn half-buried in the loose earth, its smooth brown shell against the rough texture of the disturbed soil.
