Squirrel Burying Acorns in Avignon Winter Light
by Raquel Park
Pale morning fog clings low to the earth near Avignon, softening the background into a wash of grey-green. An early winter squirrel crouches in the foreground, its russet fur contrasting against the pale, damp soil. Dappled sunlight falls through the canopy above, painting shifting patches of gold across its back and the scattered acorns. The animal digs with quick, precise movements, its dark claws breaking the dry leaf litter. A gnarled oak branch frames the left side of the view, creating a natural window that isolates the small creature. The air remains still, holding the quiet tension of a fragile ecosystem. The squirrel pauses, one acorn held firmly between its paws, the rough texture of the nut sharp against its soft fur. A shadow stretches long across the ground where the branch meets the earth.
