A street-side fishmonger in Durban’s Bluff market tends to a stainless steel worktable under a harsh, overcast sky that flattens shadows but saturates the wet surfaces. He grips a heavy-duty hose nozzle, spraying a rhythmic arc of water over a mountain of silver mackerel to keep them fresh for the afternoon rush. The bright metal of the nozzle contrasts sharply with the dull grey of the concrete floor and the iridescent scales of the fish. Behind him, corrugated zinc walls reflect the diffuse light, while a plastic colander sits idle nearby, half-filled with ice.
