Under the sodium glow of a Durban night street, a makeshift roadside stall hums with low activity. A vendor in a faded blue shirt leans over a steaming pot, using metal tongs to adjust skewers of grilled snoek, the fish glistening with oil and spice. Behind him, a rack of colorful plastic chairs hangs from a corrugated iron awning, catching the orange spill of a nearby streetlamp. A customer in a heavy wool cardigan waits patiently, holding a paper cone of pap, while a thermos sits precariously on the edge of the counter beside a stack of chipped ceramic bowls.
