Sorting Catch in Durban

Rain slicks the corrugated zinc roof of a Durban beachfront shack, where a lone fisherman in a yellow slicker sorts a tangled catch under the amber spill of a single bare bulb. Beside his workbench, a cluster of bright orange and white fishing floats rests in a chipped enamel bowl, against the dark, wet seaweed draped over a crate. The dusk light falls through a torn blue tarp, casting dappled shadows on the plaster wall behind him, while the distant glow of the Golden Mile’s neon signs bleeds into the grey mist. A discarded tin can sits near his boot, half-filled with rainwater, reflecting the dim interior.
