Midday Light on Fishmonger
Overcast midday light flattens the colors of a narrow alley in Busan’s Jagalchi Market, where a fishmonger in a yellow rubber apron pauses to wipe his hands on a stained towel. Behind him, stacked stainless steel basins reflect the dull sky, while a plastic crate of live flounder writhes on wet concrete. A paper lantern hangs limp above the stall, its red ink faded by salt air, against the sleek, industrial ventilation ducts snaking along the brick wall. The scene is busy but still, showing the quiet rhythm of a worker’s break amidst the damp, metallic smells of the sea. One drop of water slides down a glass jar, distorting the view of dried seafood behind it.
