Sorting Catch in Kochi

Under the harsh, flat winter noon light of Kochi, a fishmonger in a faded blue polyester apron sorts a pile of silver mackerel on a wet concrete slab. His hands, rough and stained with salt, move with practiced efficiency, fingers deftly scaling the fish while water drips from the edge into a shallow drain. Beside him, a white plastic basin holds ice and a few larger pomfret, their scales catching the bright sunlight in sharp, faceted glints. The background is a blur of corrugated tin roofs and hanging laundry, showing the gritty reality of the daily catch.
