Spider Fangs in Somali Monsoon Afternoon Light

by Hassan Woodard

Late afternoon sun reflects off a nearby water surface, casting a silver glare across the serrated edges of a spider's fangs. The chitinous teeth gleam with a wet, translucent quality against the dark, textured exoskeleton. Fine, hair-like structures fringe the base of the fangs, appearing almost see-through in the humid air. The background dissolves into a soft blur of green vegetation and shimmering water, showing the tiny scale of the predator. A drop of rain rests on the lower mandible, distorting the light into a tiny, sharp prism before gravity pulls it away. The chitin edge catches the reflected brightness, creating a sharp line against the soft green blur.
