The winter noon light is flat and diffuse, reflecting off the slick stone and the silver scales of herring piled in a wooden crate. In the background, the blue-painted wooden shutters of a workshop stand open, revealing a glimpse of a loom shuttle resting on a workbench. A child in a bright red jacket runs past, kicking up a small spray of seawater, his laughter echoing off the wind-swept ramparts.
