Fisherman in Auckland at Early Morning Light

A damp Auckland laneway glows under the diffuse, cool light of early morning, where a retired fisherman leans against a weathered corrugated iron shed. He wears a faded yellow rain slicker and a woolen beanie pulled low over his eyes, his gloved hands resting on the handle of a rusted wheelbarrow filled with wet kelp and broken shells. Behind him, a cluster of bright orange buoys leans precariously against a stack of grey concrete blocks, their surfaces slick with mist. The ground is paved with uneven bluestone, stained dark by decades of salt and rain. One, chipped red sign hangs crookedly above a locked gate, its paint peeling to reveal layers of older coats.
