Leaking Hydrant Under Elevated Train Bamako Twilight

by Rick Garrison

Orange-red fire hydrant stands beneath the steel trusses of an elevated railway in Bamako. A thin stream of water arcs from the valve, striking sun-baked asphalt that has turned dark and slick from recent monsoon rains. Sodium-vapor lamps overhead cast a heavy yellow-orange glow across the wet pavement, creating elongated reflections that ripple in the puddles. The concrete support pillars rise steeply on either side, their surfaces rough and stained. Shadows stretch long and soft under the industrial structure, while the air hangs visibly thick and humid. The water flows steadily onto the darkened road surface, leaving a glistening trail that catches the artificial light.
