Smokejumper Parachute Museum Plinth Night in on a museum plinth near Mbarara

Smokejumper Parachute Museum Plinth Night

by Debbie Kemp

Fluorescent tubes cast harsh, cold illumination across a museum plinth where a smokejumper parachute hangs suspended in the wet season. Dust particles drift visibly through the light shafts, marking the stillness of the deep night. The parachute fabric, textured with forest residue, rests on a surface that defies gravity. From the same landing, a staircase extends upward and downward simultaneously, its steps carved from the same stone as the plinth. The metal risers gleam under the artificial glow, creating a sharp geometric anomaly in the indoor space. A shadow from the parachute falls across the impossible stairwell, at the base of the surreal structure in concrete reality.
