Colored Powders in Manaus Ceremonial Hall
by Kai Parsons
Dappled sunlight falls through overhead canopy leaves, striking rows of open wooden bins filled with vibrant powders in crimson, ochre, and deep indigo. The concrete floor of the ceremonial hall in Manaus bears the sheen of recent wet season rain, reflecting the scattered light in soft, distorted patches. Humid air hangs heavy, visible as a slight haze that softens the edges of the stacked containers. Weather-beaten wood grain marks the bin edges, against the fine, dry texture of the pigments inside. Dust motes remain suspended in the shafts of light, while shadows from the surrounding foliage stretch across the colorful mounds, creating a pattern of bright spots and cool darkness. at the edge is a single grain of red powder clinging to the rough edge of a splintered bin corner.
