Silhouetted Kookaburra on Wind-Scoured Ridge
by Lynn Castro
Soft, overcast dawn light washes the wet season landscape in a uniform gray glow. A kookaburra perches on a rough, wind-scoured branch of a gum tree, its dark form stark against the pale, low-hanging clouds. The bird's feathers appear dense and slightly ruffled by the breeze, creating a textured silhouette that stands out against the diffuse sky. Below, the ridge line is obscured by mist, blending the ground into the horizon. The wet season moisture hangs heavy in the air, visible as a sheen on the bark and the subtle dampness of the surrounding foliage. The bird's beak points upward, frozen in a moment of stillness before the first call breaks the quiet. One feather edge catches the faint light, defining the curve of its back against the void.
