Crow on Fence Post at Sunrise
by Kay Howell
Dark feathers of a crow stand out against the pale morning sky while perched atop a weathered wooden fence post. The bird sits in deep shadow, its form defined only by a sharp rim of golden light tracing the curve of its back and the tip of its beak. Below, the ground is damp and scattered with dry leaves that lie flat or rest in small piles. The perspective rises from the grass, making the post appear tall and imposing. A gust of wind catches the loose foliage, sending leaves skittering across the wet earth near the base. The tidal inlet lies just beyond, its surface reflecting the soft, low angle of the early sun. The bird remains still, head turned slightly, watching the movement of the leaves with an intense, unblinking gaze. The texture of the rough wood contrasts with the sleek, dark plumage of the bird.
