Silhouetted Hornbill Nest in Kentucky Tree Cavity

by Petra Ballard

Hard coastal glare slices through the humid air, turning a tree cavity into a deep black void against a washed-out sky. Inside the rough-hewn hollow, a hornbill nest rests, its form reduced to a stark silhouette. The bark surrounding the opening is dark and textured, absorbing the intense afternoon light. Rain has recently passed, leaving the wood glistening with moisture that catches the harsh sun. The bird itself is barely visible within the shadow, a shape defined only by the outline of its beak against the bright background. Water droplets rest on the outer rim of the cavity, reflecting the intense white light. The scene is defined by the contrast between the dark, wet wood and the blinding brightness of the late afternoon sun.
