Silhouetted Ceremonial Masks in Wolaita Sodo Hall
by Arnold Rojas
Deep indigo twilight fills a ceremonial hall in Wolaita Sodo where rows of traditional masks hang in perfect symmetrical alignment. The masks appear as stark black silhouettes against the bright, diffused glow of the blue hour sky visible through high windows behind them. Dramatic, heavy clouds streak across the exterior horizon, casting a cool, uniform light that flattens the foreground into shadow. The wooden textures of the mask frames are barely distinguishable, reduced to solid shapes against the luminous backdrop. A faint outline of carved details remains visible on the nearest mask where the backlighting grazes the edge. The symmetry creates a rhythmic pattern that extends from the floor to the high ceiling, showing the stillness of the objects against the moving clouds outside.
