Silhouetted Batik Stacks in Javanese Twilight Market

Indigo and ochre batik cloth folds stack in perfect vertical columns within the high, vaulted space of a Yogyakarta prayer hall. The heavy fabric creates deep, rhythmic shadows that break the flat planes of the room. Backlight from the open entrance frames the stacks as dark, solid shapes against the fading blue of the rainy season sky. Moisture hangs in the air, softening the edges of the hanging textiles and leaving a sheen on the polished stone floor. The symmetrical arrangement of the bundles creates clear stillness, with the rich textures of the wax-resist patterns visible only as subtle ridges in the dim light. The lowest fold rests heavily on the ground, anchoring the towering stacks.
