Hokkaido Temple Bell Tower Twilight Reflection
by Lorene Kim
Deep shadows cloak a wooden bell tower in a Hokkaido temple precinct, where the structure rises against a heavy purple dusk sky. Low-hanging clouds press close to the eaves, while a faint rim light traces the roofline edges. Lanterns line the surrounding path, casting warm, amber pools of light that contrast with the cool blue tones of the twilight. A wet stone surface in the foreground mirrors the tower and the glowing lanterns, creating a symmetrical, mirrored composition. The bells hang motionless within the open belfry, their dark silhouettes visible against the fading light. Early spring air is suggested by the bare branches of nearby trees and the crisp clarity of the shadowed wood textures. The reflection splits the image, doubling the vertical lines of the architecture and the horizontal glow of the lanterns.
