Shipwright Caulking Hull in Wet Season Light

by Ana Park

Bright late-afternoon light floods the open-air workshop in Pereira, illuminating the curve of a wooden hull under construction. Thick strands of white oakum fill the dark gaps between planks. A shipwright, hands stained with resin and tar, presses the fibrous material into the seam using a heavy iron caulking iron. Beside him rests a wooden mallet with a worn, dark handle. Low-hanging wet-season clouds cast soft, diffuse shadows across the damp wooden deck, while rain-slicked beams create leading lines that guide toward the worker's focused posture. The wood surface glistens with moisture, and the oakum fibers swell slightly against the dark seams. A small droplet of water rests on the tip of the iron tool.
