Volcanic Cone Rim Light Over Floodplain in across a floodplain after rain near Almaty

Volcanic Cone Rim Light Over Floodplain

by Jeanne Lewis

Deep indigo shadows cover the base of a perfectly symmetrical volcanic cone rising from a wet floodplain near Almaty. A thin rim of pale light traces the upper ridge, separating the dark rock from the fading blue sky. Early autumn grasses lie flattened and glistening across the ground, their green hues muted by evening dampness. Puddles on the flat surface reflect the cone's silhouette and the deepening twilight. Wind whips the low vegetation into a constant, restless motion along the slope. The smooth, unbroken rock face stands stark against the soft, darkening horizon, while a final shadow falls across the nearest puddle.
