Sapporo scientist lifts ice core in split weather

by Archer Howell

Honeyed amber light floods the right side of the frame where gloved hands lift a cylindrical ice core tube into a white foam cradle. The left side remains locked in falling snow, creating a sharp vertical divide across the equipment. Exposed metal rails converge toward a distant vanishing point, guiding the eye through the contrasting zones. Early spring thaw marks the ground with wet patches and melting slush near the foam base. Salt wind ripples the edges of the white lab coat, while the ice core itself shows distinct stratified layers of blue and white. The boundary between the sunny half and the snowy half cuts cleanly through the scene, leaving the scientist's focused posture untouched by the impossible weather shift.
