Sailboat Running Wing-on-Wing in Mozambique Dawn

by Jonathan Harris

Cold silver dawn light spills across the dark, choppy waters of the Mozambique channel under a ceiling of heavy, gray rain clouds. From behind, the sailboat cuts through the wet sea, its mainsail and jib set wing-on-wing to catch the light trade winds. The weathered wood deck glistens with moisture, showing the texture of taut rigging lines stretching toward the bow. Rain-slicked canvas hangs heavy, its fabric darkened by the storm, against the pale, misty horizon where the sea meets the cloud bank. One rope coil rests on the starboard gunwale, its fibers damp and matted. The vessel moves steadily forward, leaving a faint, churning wake that breaks the mirror-like surface of the water. A drop of rain slides down the edge of the boom.
