Catamaran Beached in Fogbound Predawn Auckland
by Erica Brady
Deep shadow swallows the hull of a beached catamaran resting on the wet sand beside a harbor mouth near Grey Lynn. A thin rim of pale light outlines the boat's mast against the predawn darkness, cutting through the heavy midsummer fog. Fine droplets of light drizzle coat the fiberglass surface, creating a slick, dark sheen that reflects the faint ambient glow. The diagonal line of the hull stretches across the frame, anchoring the composition against the soft, grey expanse of the water and sky. Mist rests on the distant breakwater, obscuring the horizon while the wet sand glistens under the faint, diffuse illumination. Water pools in the shallow depressions around the keel, mirroring the muted sky above. A small, rusted cleat on the deck catches a faint highlight, at the base of the vessel in the quiet, damp morning air.
