Orange rust stains streak the metal rungs of a fire escape ladder suspended above a grimy back alley in Xiamen. The twilight sky reflects off the wet pavement, casting a cool, gray sheen over the scene. A metal dumpster sits directly beneath the ladder, its surface dented and slick with rain. Wind funnels dry leaves and crumpled paper along the curb, scattering them against the damp concrete. The market-lined street looms in the background, its stalls dim and silent. Water droplets rest on the iron bars, catching the faint ambient light. One leaf rests on the lowest step, soaked and heavy.
