Rowing Crew in Catia La Mar Temple Courtyard
by Arnold Downs
Heavy rain streaks across the dark, wet concrete of the temple courtyard as a rowing shell crew powers forward. The early afternoon light struggles through thick, slate-gray monsoon clouds, casting a flat, diffuse glow over the scene. Seven athletes in matching dark uniforms lean in unison, their backs arched as they drive oars into a shallow pool of water collected in the paved area. Raindrops ripple outward from the oar blades, creating concentric circles on the surface. The stone walls of the temple rise in the background, their weathered textures softened by the mist. Water cascades from the roof eaves, forming a curtain that frames the athletes on the left. at the edge is one drop of water sliding off the tip of the nearest oar blade, falling straight down to hit the puddle.
