Stark fluorescent light cuts through the predawn darkness of a wet-season temple courtyard in Salvador. The wet stone floor glistens under the harsh white glow, reflecting the silhouettes of a capoeira circle. Six figures stand in a perfect symmetrical ring, their skin dark against the pale, slick ground. Rain-slicked tiles show deep puddles that mirror the overhead fixtures. The air is heavy with moisture, visible in the way the light scatters slightly around the dancers. Concrete walls rise on either side, framing the circle with rigid lines. The participants wear simple, dark clothing that absorbs the light, leaving only their outlines and the wet sheen of the ground to define the space. One reflection of a bare foot rests on the slick tile.
