Synchronized Dragon Boat Crew in Georgia Afternoon
by Lynn Foreman
Soft, diffused light from an overcast sky illuminates a long dragon boat gliding across still water in late spring Georgia. Eleven paddlers in matching uniforms lean forward in perfect unison, their wooden oars dipping simultaneously into the dark, glassy surface. The water acts as a flawless mirror, reflecting the red and gold dragon head at the bow and the rhythmic motion of the crew below. Humid air hangs heavy, suggested by the slight sheen on the wet wood and the clarity of the submerged oar handles. Ripples expand gently from the blades, breaking the reflection momentarily before the water settles back into a deep, mysterious stillness. The red dragon head stares directly ahead, its painted eyes catching the gray light.
