Matariki Ceremony in Auckland Courtyard After Rain

Soft, diffused light from heavy overcast skies illuminates a stone courtyard in Wynyard Quarter, Auckland. A group of people stands in a loose circle, wearing dark garments that contrast with the wet, grey paving stones. Above, the sky is a uniform sheet of grey, yet faint points of light appear where stars should not be visible in daylight, creating a subtle, impossible anomaly. The midsummer green of surrounding trees looks saturated and deep against the muted architecture. Water droplets rest on the hem of a woven cloak resting on the ground. A small, hand-carved wooden totem stands upright in the center, its surface darkened by the recent rain. The figures look upward, their faces reflecting the somber, wistful mood of the morning.
