Row of Diwali Oil Lamps in Jaipur Prayer Hall

by Kay Ali

Clay oil lamps line a long stone ledge inside the prayer hall at Johari Bazaar, their small flames glowing against the deep indigo of the night. Cold moonlight pours through the high windows, casting long, sharp shadows that stretch across the rough, weathered stone floor. The lamps sit in perfect symmetrical rows, their terracotta surfaces textured with the dust of early autumn. Warm amber light from the flames contrasts with the cool blue tones of the moon, illuminating the intricate carvings on the pillars behind them. Each flame flickers gently, casting a soft halo on the smooth clay rims. at the edge is the reflection of a single flame dancing on the polished surface of a nearby brass bowl.
