Diwali Oil Lamps on Market Steps After Rain

Soft, diffused daylight falls through a humid sky above a symmetrical stone staircase in a Kolkata market. Rows of small clay diya lamps sit in perfect alignment on the wet, gray steps, their oil surfaces still and dark. Rain has left the stone slick, reflecting the pale gray of the overcast sky and the warm amber glow of the wicks. The damp air hangs heavy, visible as a slight haze that softens the edges of the surrounding market stalls. Clay textures show rough, hand-molded imperfections, against the smooth, wet stone. Each lamp holds a single flame that burns steadily against the gray backdrop. The final row of lamps ends at the bottom step, where one drop of water hangs from the clay rim.
