Day of Dead Altar with Hundreds of Candles

by Rose Spears

Tiered shelves in a ceremonial hall near Puebla hold hundreds of flickering candles that cast warm pools of light against the cool season air. Vibrant marigolds and hand-painted skulls line the steps beside rows of bread and fruit offerings resting on embroidered cloths. Noon light falls through sheer curtains, falling across the stone floor where heavy shadows pool around the wooden tables. The wax flames glow steady, their golden reflections rippling on polished wood surfaces and catching the edges of ceramic bowls. Every surface reflects the collective glow, with shadows stretching long across the floor at the edge of the tiered structure.
