Surreal Oil Lamps and Miniature Buildings at Indian Ghat in at a shrine entrance in India

Surreal Oil Lamps and Miniature Buildings at Indian Ghat

by Sage Dillon

Rows of glowing oil lamps line the stone edge of the ghat, casting pools of intense orange light onto the wet steps. The copper-toned evening air hangs heavy beneath low-hanging clouds. Along the immediate foreground edges, tiny buildings no larger than shoeboxes sit in perfect rows, their miniature windows reflecting the same warm firelight. The stone surface appears cool and damp, against the heat of the flames. Shadows stretch long and straight across the masonry in a rigid, symmetrical pattern. Each flame flickers with a steady, deliberate motion, illuminating the dust motes suspended in the still air. The miniature structures rest directly on the ancient stone, their scale defying logic yet feeling solid and real. One flame tip touches the underside of a tiny eave.
