Woodblock Print Counter in Jhelum Prayer Hall

by Emmett Lawrence

Molten side light spills across a wooden counter inside a Jhelum prayer hall, illuminating rows of woodblock prints arranged in neat stacks. The heavy overcast sky outside casts a diffused, honeyed glow that softens the deep shadows within the room. Winter air settles on the rough grain of the timber and the slightly worn edges of the paper prints. Earthy tones of ochre, faded indigo, and raw sienna dominate the palette, against the dark, polished wood of the display surface. A few loose blocks rest near the front edge, their carved surfaces catching the low angle of the sun. Dust motes hover in the beams of light, settling on the texture of the paper. The final shadow stretches long across the floorboards near the counter's base.
