Reindeer Moss Cushion on Idaho Tundra Midday
Hard coastal glare strikes a dense cushion of reindeer moss resting on the stark, pale tundra of Idaho. The early autumn light flattens the landscape, turning the moss into a textured carpet of pale lime and dusty gray. Fine sea spray hangs in the air, blurring the horizon where the gray sky meets the barren ground. The moss surface appears dry yet dense, composed of countless tiny, branching stems that catch the harsh sunlight. Shadows fall sharply beneath the low-growing plant, defining its rounded shape against the flat, empty earth. A thin layer of white frost dusts the tips of the moss, against the deep gray of the underlying soil. The edge of the cushion meets a patch of exposed rock, highlighting the isolation of the vegetation in this coastal wilderness.
