Reindeer Lichen on Mexican Tundra at Dawn

by Kathy Portillo

Cold silver dawn light spills across a flat, high-altitude plain where patches of reindeer lichen form a textured carpet. The pale, branching coral structures rest against dark, volcanic soil, their muted grays and soft whites standing out in the early morning chill. A fine mist of sea spray hangs low over the ground, softening the edges of the rocks and creating a hazy veil that blurs the distant horizon. The landscape feels vast and empty, dominated by the stark, geologic grandeur of the terrain. Tiny droplets of moisture rest on the lichen tips, catching the faint, cool light. One jagged stone anchors the foreground, its rough surface against the delicate, fuzzy texture of the plant life surrounding it.
