Frost Flowers on Lichen Bark Noon Light
by Blake Velez
Brilliant white crystalline structures rise like miniature ferns from the rough, textured surface of lichen-covered bark. The flat glare of noon floods the indoor space, casting sharp, distinct shadows that define the jagged edges of the ice formations. Dust motes drift visibly through the shafts of broad skylight bouncing off the pale surrounding walls, adding a tangible sense of suspended motion. The early spring thaw softens the background colors, revealing muted greens and grays of the organic substrate beneath the frozen bloom. Tiny facets of the ice catch the light, creating a spectrum of faint blues and harsh whites that contrast with the matte, earthy texture of the bark. at the edge rests on a single shard of ice reflecting the bright ceiling light.
